We got our 3 copies of LW4 for our Pentiums yesterday. For those that are
looking for new stuff, there is some, but not the overwhelming changes I
expected from what I was hearing. Of course, none of the plugins were
shipped, which I'm sure makes a big difference. The preview of the
surfaces is a nice touch, although since I haven't been able to figure
out the equivalent to the HELP key on the Amiga, I can't tell if there's
a keyboard equiv for RENDERing the texture preview. I sure hope so, it'll
remove a lot of the ease of use if I have to click on the button every
time I make a change to a surface.
It's fairly quick on the Pentium 90mhz, but holy memory pig
Batman! We have 32megs of RAM on our machines but LW, run straight from
Windows 3.1 with nothing else running shows 21 megs free! WHat the hell?
I know Windows sucks (in more ways than one) but this is a little out of
control. I can run LW on my 24meg Amiga 4000 and have 22+ megs free.
Other new stuff: Alpha shadows. A welcome addition. Multiple Undo
and redo on Modeller. Very nice. Unseen by rays for each object, but the
object still seems to render even when this is clicked. Dunno, the manual
is....incomplete.
Buncha other stuff too, but a lot is missing, like the HIIP
fileformat loader/saver thing, all plugins etc.
Also, in Modeller, it doesn't always redraw the object
completely. It looks like it's doing an every second or 3rd polygon
redraw or something. I assume it's a bug that'll be fixed in the release
version. If it's a feature that I can turn off, haven't figured it out yet.

And remember, if it says "Microsoft" you know it sucks!
